Stage 1 · Screening

Preliminary Examination — Pattern & Marking

The BPSC Prelims is an OMR-based objective examination carrying 150 marks across 150 questions. It serves as a screening test to shortlist candidates for the Mains examination. Marks obtained in Prelims are not added to the final selection merit list.

General Studies (General Knowledge & Science)

Core Subject Composition: General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology with emphasis on daily observation); Current Events of National and International Importance; History of India and Salient Features of the History of Bihar; General Geography and Geographical Division of Bihar and its Major River Systems; Indian Polity and Economy with Major Changes in the Economy of Bihar Post-Independence; Indian National Movement and the Role of Bihar in Freedom Struggle; and General Mental Ability (Reasoning & Elementary Quantitative Aptitude).

Standardized Negative Marking: Every incorrect answer incurs a deduction of one-third (⅓ or 0.33) marks. Unattempted questions carry zero penalty. Multiple markings for a single question are treated as incorrect responses.

Stage 2 · Written Examination

Main Examination — Structure, Papers & Marks

The BPSC Mains examination consists of 5 papers conducted over descriptive answer booklets, with the exception of the Optional Subject which is conducted as an objective MCQ-based qualifying module. Total merit is determined out of 900 descriptive marks.

Detailed Paper-by-Paper Breakdown

  • General Studies Paper-I (300 Marks): Modern History of India and Indian Culture (including Patna Qalam, Mauryan & Pal Art, Western Education, Santhal & Birsa Munda Rebellions, Champaran Satyagraha, Quit India Movement in Bihar); Current Events of National and International Importance; and Statistical Analysis, Graphs, and Diagrams (72 marks dedicated to data interpretation, testing analytical clarity).
  • General Studies Paper-II (300 Marks): Indian Polity (functioning of political system, federal structure, governor's role, judicial review, electoral reforms in Bihar); Indian Economy and Geography of India (planning, agriculture, industrial development, regional disparity, physical/economic geography of Bihar); and Role & Impact of Science and Technology in the development of India and Bihar (applications in governance, disaster management, agriculture, and infrastructure).
  • Essay Paper (300 Marks): Structured into three sections of 100 marks each. Section I covers general philosophical/thematic topics; Section II focuses on socio-economic, political, and national issues; Section III tests depth on Bihar-specific cultural expressions, folk proverbs, rural terminology, and regional issues.
  • General Hindi (100 Marks — Qualifying): Matriculation level paper testing Essay writing (30 marks), Grammar (30 marks), Syntax/Vakya Vinyas (25 marks), and Precis Writing/Sankshepan (15 marks). Minimum qualifying mark is 30%.
  • Optional Subject (100 Marks — MCQ Qualifying): Candidates select one optional subject from the approved BPSC list. It consists of 100 objective questions and serves purely as a qualifying gate without impacting the final merit ranking.
Stage 3 · Personality Test

Personality Test (Interview) — 120 Marks

  • Interview Board: Conducted by an official BPSC panel at the BPSC Commission Office, Patna.
  • Marks Weightage: Carries 120 marks, representing 11.76% of the final merit total of 1,020 marks.
  • Assessment Dimensions: General alertness, intellectual curiosity, balance of judgement, critical powers of assimilation, ability for social cohesion and leadership, and awareness of the administrative and developmental roadmap of Bihar.
  • No Minimum Qualifying Threshold: Marks obtained in the interview are directly aggregated with the written score (GS-I + GS-II + Essay) to produce the final selection rank.
Marking Mechanics

Negative Marking & Qualifying Benchmarks

  • Prelims Negative Marking: Exactly ⅓ (0.33 marks) deducted for each incorrect answer on the OMR sheet.
  • General Hindi Qualifying Threshold: Securing 30% marks (30/100) is mandatory. If a candidate fails General Hindi, their GS-I, GS-II, and Essay answer sheets are not evaluated.
  • Optional Subject Qualifying Cut-offs:
    • General (Unreserved): 40%
    • Backward Class (BC): 36.5%
    • Extremely Backward Class (EBC): 34%
    • SC / ST / Women / PwD: 32%
  • Mains Medium: Descriptive papers (GS-I, GS-II, Essay) may be answered in Hindi, English, or Urdu as chosen during form submission. Mixed language responses in a single paper are not permitted.
  • Final Rank Formula: GS-I (300) + GS-II (300) + Essay (300) + Interview (120) = 1,020 Total Merit Marks.

BPSC Eligibility: Age Limits, Domicile & Education

A candidate must hold a Graduate Degree in any discipline from a recognized University or an equivalent qualification. Candidates across India can apply under the General (Unreserved) category. Domicile-based reservation benefits apply exclusively to permanent residents of Bihar.
